On the occasion of the second opening of Public Works, Reinier
de Graaf lectures on the phenomenon of Civil Servant Architects in
the 1960s and 1970s in Western Europe. The Exhibition first
appeared in Venice at the 13th Architecture Biennale, and in Spring
of 2013 was re-sited to ST AGNES in Berlin, a former Church which
features as one of the buildings in the exhibition itself. Watch
the full lecture here.

OMA-partner Reinier de Graaf gave a lecture at the Berlage
Institute on Megalopoli(tic)s.
De Graaf started by arguing that thinking big is compulsory when
thinking about 'the green cause'. One needs to think in a global
context, like Buckminster Fuller did with his Spaceship Earth
(1968) and Doxiades' global Ecumenopolis city (1967). By showing
different mappings of urban growth, De Graaf showed that the
Ecumenoplis is, in fact, not that far way. These developments take
place, not in the old Western metropolitan areas, but in the
megacities of the South and(Far-)East.

OMA partner de Graaf speaks at the Urban Age
Hong Kong Conference on the rapid growth of cities in the
developing world and the shift of power in urbanization from the
public to the private sector. De Graaf asks if we are now in
need of a new form of planning: megalopolitics.

On the growth of cities and our attempts to rank them; at this
year's PICNIC conference, Reinier de Graaf discusses
the "livability" rankings of global cities, and the blatant
shortcomings and blindspots in the criteria used to construct these
increasingly popular indices. In a world no longer defined by a
dominant West, livability rankings represent the frustrations of
aging nations, a final futile attempt to assert superiority over
urban conditions they no longer understand or control. Citing a
booming Lagos, a decaying Detroit, and the increasingly
heterogenous cities of Essen and Birmingham, de Graaf discusses the
21st century evolution of the city, and the new modes of planning
and analysis that are needed.
